Macinstruct: Get iPhone emoji without hacking.
I tried looking into this a few weeks ago, but the only options available at the time were for hacked iPhones, and I wasn't really interested in that. I wanted a way to enable the widely-proclaimed emoji icons on the iPhone without a hack. The answer came in the form of a space invader text from SanFranMatt (yes, I collect Matts) earlier this evening.
It requires a suspicious little $.99 app someone got into the Apple Store, thus requiring no official hack of your phone. (I'm sure the app itself violates Apple's Terms of Service, so you might grab it soon, if you're interested, as I'm sure it'll be quickly removed.) But it sure is fun toying with all the little icons. Details below.
How it's done:
I officially take no responsibility if this all-Japanese app is, like, emailing your credit card information to Osaka or something. But it worked for me.
PS: I stole the tasteless pic above from skylorlicio.us
Update: I stand corrected... Chinese app! (Either way, this ignorant white boy can't read it.)
Update 2: Get the free version of this.

tempting to download, if for any other reason, than to send you that poop face back.
Did not work for me. Emoji was not an option. There goes 99c.
Didn't work for me either.
Nevermind. I got it to work. I had to open the app, play around with it. I went into the regional settings, and set it to Japanese (thought that might work). I went back into international, and it worked!
Correction: got it to work! I guess I had to play around in the app longer?
Haha. Glad you got it goin'! Definitely download a version to your computer as backup before they pull the app. (Buying again under the same account won't charge you again.)

Hey, that's a Chinese app, not Japanese… at least, the language is Trad. Chinese. =P
Thanks for the tip, giving it a shot now!
Don't forget to change your regional settings. I played with the app multiple times for increasing time lengths, but it was changing the regional to Japanese that enabled it (you still have to play with the app).
I didn't have to change the regional setting, just had to reboot.
I just did the run/use/play cycle 5 or 6 times and the menu finally appeared. I kept seeing an error talking about NSURLProtocol a few times while using the app.
What actually is this mysterious Chinese application all about?
I'm a little concerned about the security implications of installing something like this onto my phone! If I was after a way to get access to peoples phones, these emoji icons would make great bait...
Does anyone know what is actually going on with this "workaround"?
There goes my 99¢, that's like 5 miles on my truck. Now I'll have to walk them :-/ ... Yes I still have no Emoji so u'll have to settle for the forward slash smiley :-//. and I've done everything restart, play change regional settings to japanese, change language to japanese....may I add it took me half a day to get it back to english so i could understand what i was doing.
Anywho, I guess the best part of this is that i was forced to read ur blogs in search for answers...What i got out of this? I hate emoji now more than before i knew it existed and i want to go to canada a met a hot spike hair guy that eats unhealty but still manages to stay fit :-)
thanks for wasting my $.99 and making me walk an extra five miles
It DID worked. Yes, it is Chinese app, but hey who cares?! It is too hard for Western People to learn entire different alphabets anyway!
